certain members to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Civil Air Patrol was founded on December 1, 1941, as an organization of
volunteers dedicated to assisting the United States military in national defense
by performing aerial coastal patrols and emergency services within the
continental United States; and
WHEREAS,
in 1943, the capabilities of this new volunteer organization were recognized as
vital to national defense, and by a Presidential Executive Order, the Civil Air
Patrol was assigned to the War Department and was subsequently chartered by
Congress to perform three distinct missions: emergency services, aerospace
education, and cadet programs; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol is comprised of over 1,600 members in
36 squadrons located throughout the state; and
WHEREAS,
members of the Georgia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol have consistently
volunteered their services, time, and resources as they play an intricate role
in our national defense by conducting missions in homeland security, counter
drug, disaster relief, and search and rescue; and
WHEREAS,
Civil Air Patrol air and ground teams perform approximately 91 percent of inland
search and rescue missions tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center;
and
WHEREAS,
in 2005, qualified ground team members from the Georgia Wing were deployed to
provide emergency services to disaster areas caused by Hurricane Katrina;
and
WHEREAS,
since the organization's inception, the "flying minutemen" of the Civil Air
Patrol have served this state with honor and distinction, and all citizens owe
these brave volunteers a tremendous debt of gratitude for their many invaluable
contributions to Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the noble and unselfish contributions the volunteers of the
Civil Air Patrol have made to the State of Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Major General Antonio J. Pineda, Civil Air Patrol
National Commander; Colonel Don Greene, Georgia Wing Commander; and Lieutenant
Colonel Willie Heredia, Georgia Wing Vice Commander, are invited to appear
before the House of Representatives for purposes of being recognized by the
House and receiving appropriate copies of this resolution at a date and time to
be fixed by the Speaker of the House.
