RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Mrs. Cherry Waldrep Clements; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Cherry Waldrep Clements was born in Monroe County, Georgia, on June 12,
1915, and grew up on a farm near Dublin, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
she graduated from Dublin High School at age 16 and earned a Normal Diploma from
Georgia State College for Women (now called Georgia College & State
University) before beginning a teaching career at a small, rural school in
Cabiness, Georgia, at age 18; she later earned a Bachelor of Science in
education from Georgia Southern University and was the first woman at the
University of Georgia to earn a Master of Science in math education;
and
WHEREAS,
during World War II, she served her country with distinction by decoding enemy
messages; and
WHEREAS,
beginning in 1958, Mrs. Clements taught math at Druid Hills High School in
DeKalb County for 27 years, during which time she earned great respect for her
inspirational teaching methods and innovation and earned numerous accolades
honoring her dedication to her students; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Clements was an active member of North Decatur United Methodist Church and
served ten terms as president of the United Methodist Women's organization and
as a board member of the North Georgia Church Homeless Council and the Council
on Faith and Environment, among many other important contributions to the
Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS,
after she retired, she devoted her time to a variety of progressive causes,
including service as a board member of the Druid Hills Civic Association and
membership in CAUTION, where she helped to combat plans to develop a freeway
through historic Atlanta neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Clements was highly active in Atlanta WAND (Women's Action for New
Directions), decrying the dangers of nuclear proliferation and excesses in
United States military spending for obsolete weapons systems, while empowering
Georgia women to lift their voices in opposition to war; and
WHEREAS,
she served on the Board of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity and organized meals for
500 volunteers who participated in the seven-day Carter Work Camp in 1998;
and
WHEREAS,
this extraordinary lady was the author of three cookbooks and ran a nonprofit
catering business called "Cherry's Jubilee," serving meals for church and
volunteer organizations; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Clements is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Hal
Clements, and is survived by her three children, Judy Clements, Cathy Clements
Bradshaw, and Tom Clements, in addition to her grandchildren, Jane and Ward
Bradshaw; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia lost a most estimable citizen on January 5, 2006, with the passing of
Mrs. Cherry Waldrep Clements.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mrs.
Cherry Waldrep Clements and extend their most sincere condolences to her family
and friends.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mrs. Cherry Waldrep Clements.
