RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and honoring the contributions of Sally Campbell and the Sheltering Arms Early
Education and Family Centers; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Centers in Atlanta, Georgia, were
founded in 1888 when a group of Atlanta women formed a sewing circle to mend
clothing for needy children and while delivering clothes, discovered a child
tied to a bedpost as a safety measure while the mother worked long hours in a
mill and, determined to help these children, the women began a mission to care
for them; and
WHEREAS,
today Sheltering Arms is the oldest, largest, and most respected nonprofit child
development program in Atlanta serving more than 3,600 children and their
families from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS,
the Sheltering Arms program empowers families and strengthens communities by
providing quality, affordable early childhood education and child care and
comprehensive family support; and
WHEREAS,
the quality of care provided by Sheltering Arms is demonstrated by the fact that
approximately 92 percent of the children graduating from the Sheltering
Armś
16 centers each year meet or exceed kindergarten readiness requirements;
and
WHEREAS,
on May 25, 2005, under the direction and loving guidance of Director Sally
Campbell, the Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Centers in Atlanta were
designated as a "Quality Initiative Program of Excellence" by the National Head
Start Association; and
WHEREAS,
this designation is a prestigious honor awarded to only a few early learning
programs nation wide; and
WHEREAS,
due to the perseverance and dedication of people like Director Sally Campbell,
and the staff and volunteers of Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family
Centers, the tradition of providing quality care and love for those who need it
most, our children, continues to live on.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body
recognizes and honors the contributions of Sally Campbell and the Sheltering
Arms Early Education and Family Centers for their outstanding achievements and
contributions to
Georgiás
families, the community, the State of Georgia, and to the children.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Sally
Campbell and Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Centers.
