A RESOLUTION

Commending Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Eta Lambda Chapter; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was founded by the Seven Jewels (Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy) on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was the first intercollegiate fraternity established for African-Americans and the Eta Lambda graduate chapter was established in 1921; and

WHEREAS, the Jewels laid a firm foundation for the principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity; and

WHEREAS, Alpha college and graduate chapters have worked diligently and tirelessly to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices facing African-Americans through their many programs, such as "Go-to-High-School," "Go-to-College," voter registration and voter rights campaigns, Alpha Head Start Male Initiative, Project Alpha, Leadership Academy, mentoring, building affordable housing, scholarships, and many other community service projects; and

WHEREAS, the Eta Lambda Chapter has provided outstanding leadership in national programs and has become a model chapter in living up to the fraternity's goals of Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for all Mankind; and

WHEREAS, numerous brothers in the fraternity have been outstanding national leaders in the struggle to achieve civil rights in America, such as Senator Edward Brooke, Dr. W. E. B. DuBois, Congressman William Gray, Mayor Maynard Jackson, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and Ambassador Andrew Young; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2006 and Eta Lambda its 86th year.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Alpha Phi Alpha and the Eta Lambda Chapter for their outstanding contributions to this nation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to National President Daryl Matthews and Eta Lambda Chapter President Ronald Natson.
