House Resolution 2199
By: Representatives Hill of the 180th, Stephens of the 164th, and Carter of the 159th

A RESOLUTION

Commending the Navy League of the United States; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the national defense and economic well-being of the United States are largely dependent upon strong sea services in the form of the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps, the United States Merchant Marine, and the United States Coast Guard; and

WHEREAS, the War of 1812 was essentially fought over maritime commerce, our nation's sovereign right to free seas, and the inviolability of our nation's vessels on the high seas; and

WHEREAS, all of the sea services, including the United States Revenue Cutter Service, the precursor of the United States Coast Guard, fought valiantly in the War of 1812; and

WHEREAS, the War of 1812 is a timeless reminder of the vulnerability of Georgia's coastline and land borders to attack by elements of a hostile foreign power; and

WHEREAS, the Navy League of the United States is a civilian organization dedicated to informing the American people and their government that the United States is a maritime nation; and

WHEREAS, the League has endeavored to ensure that the courage and sacrifice of Georgia's warrior sons and daughters, as well as the lessons of the War of 1812, are not forgotten.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Navy League of the United States for its outstanding efforts to remind us of a perilous time in our young nation's and our young state's history.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Navy League of the United States.
