RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the vital impact of public education on our democratic society and commending
THE QUEST for Public Education, Inc. ("THE QUEST") for its role in promoting
public involvement in the process of public education; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
public education is the foundation of social democracy and serves as one of our
countrýs
premier public institutions; and
WHEREAS,
one of the major purposes of public education is the cultivation of a thoughtful
and informed citizenry, ready and capable of contributing in the public arena of
ideas and civic responsibilities; and
WHEREAS,
public education also fulfills the important role of providing a literate,
skilled, and productive work force to meet the ever-growing needs of our
businesses and communities; and
WHEREAS,
in the State of Georgia, public education serves 1,513,521 students annually,
representing 92 percent of all students (Kindergarten through twelfth grade) in
the state; and
WHEREAS,
THE QUEST was established with the goals of celebrating public
educatiońs
accomplishments and encouraging renewed public commitment to the education of
our
communitýs
children; and
WHEREAS,
in celebration of public education, THE QUEST is producing a daylong musical
concert to be held in Centennial Olympic Park that will highlight the importance
of music as a proven and essential tool for educational success;
and
WHEREAS,
in addition to THE
QUEST́S
concert, THE QUEST will create continuing opportunities for musical education in
public schools through a program of grants for public school music teachers and
through the provision of musical instruments to qualified public school
students.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body
recognizes the benefits and importance of public education and encourages all
citizens, businesses, and civic organizations to commit their time, energy, and
resources to support the important work of Georgia's public
schools.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body commends THE QUEST for serving as a
transforming force in the process of focusing community awareness and resources
on public education.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to THE QUEST and
to the public and the press.
