House Resolution 2289

A RESOLUTION

Honoring and expressing appreciation to House Speaker Emeritus Terry Coleman; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mr. Terry Coleman is one of the most distinguished leaders of the State of Georgia and a native son and lifelong resident of Dodge County; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Dodge County High School, he went on to earn an Associates Degree at Reinhardt College and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and a Juris Doctor degree; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman is a well known and respected member of the Middle Georgia business community in his firm, Coleman and Company Benefits, Inc., and as a member of the boards of directors of two financial institutions; and

WHEREAS, he has been active in civic affairs, serving as a member of the Eastman Volunteer Fire Department for many years, as a member of the Mercer Medical School Board of Governors, and as a member and past president of the Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, he and his wife Carol Cofield Coleman are the proud parents of two children and have two grandchildren and he is well known as a devoted family man; and

WHEREAS, the Colemans are valued members of the First Methodist Church of Eastman; and

WHEREAS, despite his outstanding service and accomplishments in other arenas, Mr. Coleman is best known as a member of this House of Representatives where he has served since 1973, chairing numerous committees, including a number of years as Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee; and in 2003, he was chosen for the highest position of honor by his colleagues when they elected him Speaker of the House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS, Speaker Emeritus Coleman is treasured by his colleagues in the House for his wisdom and knowledge of legislative matters; his courtesy, fairness, wit, and friendship; and his untiring devotion to the best interests of the State of Georgia and her people; and

WHEREAS, he has achieved many great accomplishments on many fronts, but no cause has been closer to his heart than economic development for rural Georgia and all of Georgia; and no one has done more to advance that cause; and

WHEREAS, it is proper that this body should pay tribute to its former leader, Speaker Emeritus Coleman, for his outstanding leadership and his many enduring contributions to this House of Representatives.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body hereby join in expressing appreciation to House Speaker Emeritus Terry Coleman.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Speaker Emeritus Coleman.
