A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the United States Congress to enact legislation declaring English as the
official language of the government of the United States; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the United States is comprised of individuals and groups from diverse ethnic,
cultural, and linguistic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS,
the United States has benefited and continues to benefit from this rich
diversity; and
WHEREAS,
throughout the history of the nation, the common thread binding those of
differing backgrounds has been a common language; and
WHEREAS,
in order to preserve unity in diversity, and to prevent division along
linguistic lines, the United States should maintain a language common to all
people; and
WHEREAS,
English has historically been the common language and the language of
opportunity in the United States; and
WHEREAS,
by learning the English language, immigrants will be empowered with the language
skills and literacy necessary to become responsible citizens and productive
workers in the United States; and
WHEREAS,
the use of a single common language in the conduct of the government's official
business will promote efficiency and fairness to all people; and
WHEREAS,
English should be recognized in law as the language of official business of the
government.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that this body
urges the United States Congress to enact legislation declaring English as the
official language of the government of the United States.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to President
George W. Bush, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the
United States House of Representatives, and each member of the Georgia
congressional delegation.
