RESOLUTION
Commending
Captain Mike McKinnon; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Captain Mike McKinnon is a native of Claiborne County, Tennessee, and he
received his commission as a naval officer in May of 1981 after graduating from
the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical
engineering; and
WHEREAS,
his outstanding performance on sea assignments led to his command of the USS
Kentucky
and assignment as navigator and operations officer on the USS
Batfish,
both operating out of Charleston, South Carolina, and as executive officer on
the USS West
Virginia, based in Kings Bay, Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
his shore assignments included duty in Charleston, South Carolina, on the staff
of the commander, Submarine Squadron Eighteen, where he served as the staff's
operations officer; and
WHEREAS,
he was officer-in-charge of the torpedo retriever SVC
Crayfish
and combat systems director and engineering department director for the
Submarine Training Facility; and
WHEREAS,
Captain McKinnon was deputy commander for readiness and training on the staff of
the commander, Submarine Squadron Twenty, in Kings Bay; and
WHEREAS,
his most recent assignment was as the assistant chief of staff for plans and
policy and as assistant chief of staff for operations on the staff of the
commander, Submarine Group Eight, in Naples, Italy; and
WHEREAS,
on August 10, 2004, Captain McKinnon became the sixteenth commanding officer of
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Kings Bay, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
he is entitled to wear the Legion of Merit (two awards), the Meritorious Service
Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards),
the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Defense Service Medal, and the
Humanitarian Service Medal.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend and honor Captain Mike McKinnon for his distinguished career
in the United States Navy.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the
Okefenokee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America for presentation to Captain
Mike McKinnon at their Osprey District Golden Eagle Dinner on March 29, 2005,
where he will be honored.
