RESOLUTION
Commending
the Savannah College of Art and Design for providing 25 years of excellence in
higher education and opening their new Atlanta Campus and recognizing Friday,
April 22, 2005, as Savannah College of Art and Design Day at the state capitol;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
in 1979, the Savannah College of Art and Design began classes with 71 students
and 36,000 square feet of university-owned space; and
WHEREAS,
the College has now grown to an enrollment of 7,000 students from all 50 states
and from 80 nations from around the world with 374 faculty members and 866 staff
employees; and
WHEREAS,
the College has demonstrated exemplary dedication to its motto, "to prepare
talented students for careers in the visual and performing arts, design, the
building arts, and the history of art and architecture"; and
WHEREAS,
the College has been responsible for the rehabilitation of nearly two million
square feet of building space in the downtown Savannah area, resulting in
numerous historic preservation awards; and
WHEREAS,
a recent report commissioned by the Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges
found that the
Collegés
institutional and student expenditures created 4,811 jobs and $256 million of
total economic impact; and
WHEREAS,
the College is internationally recognized and established a campus in Lacoste,
France, in 2002; and
WHEREAS,
co-founder Paula Wallace remains president of the College and, in that role, has
won numerous professional and personal awards.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in commending the students, parents, faculty, administration,
staff, and alumni of the Savannah College of Art and Design upon their 25th
anniversary, congratulate them on the success of their Lacoste, France, campus
and on the opening of their new Atlanta campus, and extend their sincere best
wishes for the
Collegés
continued success.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body recognizes April 22, 2005, as Savannah
College of Art and Design Day at the state capitol.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the president
of the Savannah College of Art and Design, the Mayor of Savannah, and the Mayor
of Atlanta.
