RESOLUTION
Commending
Sister Christine Truong My Hanh; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Sister Christine Truong My Hanh was born in Hue, South Vietnam, and was educated
by Catholic nuns; and
WHEREAS,
at age seventeen, Sister Christine left Vietnam for Singapore to become a
Catholic nun with the Order of Good Shepherd Sisters and, after taking her vows,
returned to Vietnam to serve as director of the Order of Good Shepherd Sisters
in Saigon, working with poor women, widows, and prostitutes; and
WHEREAS,
in 1975, just one week before the fall of Saigon, Sister Christine escaped to
the United States, bringing 160 handicapped children with her to freedom;
and
WHEREAS,
in 1976, the order sent Sister Christine to Hong Kong and then to the United
Kingdom where she earned her
masteŕs
degree in social work from the University of Keele while working with Vietnamese
refugees in Ireland, England, and Germany; and
WHEREAS,
she returned to Hong Kong for ten more years, giving hope and strength to
thousands of people as an advocate for the boat people detained in refugee
camps; and
WHEREAS,
Sister Christine returned to the United States, serving first with the
Metropolitan Washington, D. C. YMCA, and moving in 1991 to Atlanta as a family
counselor for Save the Children Foundation and as a consultant for St.
Joseph́s
Hospital; and
WHEREAS,
in 1993, Sister Christine founded the Good Shepherd Services of Atlanta in
DeKalb County, serving the poor, the at-risk youth, and providing elderly
services, cultural enrichment, translation services, and citizenship classes,
and the organization has expanded and now serves additional communities in
Clayton and Gwinnett Counties.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize and honor Sister Christine Truong My Hanh for her strength,
faith, and good works in our community.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Sister Hanh.
