A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT

To amend Chapter 24 of Title 33 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to insurance generally, so as to provide that all policies of life insurance issued in this state shall provide for the payment of a minimum burial benefit which shall be paid directly to the funeral home or funeral director that handled the burial or cremation of the insured; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:

SECTION 1.
Chapter 24 of Title 33 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to insurance generally, is amended by adding a new Code Section 33_24_6.2 to read as follows:
"33_24_6.2.
All policies or contracts of life insurance issued, delivered, or issued for delivery in this state on and after July 1, 2005, shall provide for the payment of a minimum cremation benefit in the amount of $500.00 and a minimum burial benefit of $1,500.00 which shall be paid directly to the funeral home or funeral director that handled the burial or cremation of the insured. Such benefit shall be paid prior to the distribution of any funds from such policy or contract of life insurance to any beneficiary of such policy or contract."

SECTION 2.
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
