Senate Resolution 1279
By: Senator Bulloch of the 11th

A RESOLUTION

Commending Mr. Douglas Harrell; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mr. Douglas Harrell, a 20 year-old college student from Whigham, Georgia, had a fateful opportunity to put the skills he learned as an Eagle Scout to very good use on March 10, 2006, when he courageously rescued a man from drowning off the coast of Pensacola, Florida; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Harrell and his companions were on spring break when they noticed four men waving to a swimmer who was struggling in the ocean waters; and

WHEREAS, after two off-duty lifeguards tried and failed to rescue the drowning man, Mr. Harrell decided he had to take matters into his own hands; and

WHEREAS, braving the cold waters amidst the strong winds of that day, Mr. Harrell swam to the swimmer in peril and drew on the life-saving techniques he learned from scouting to pull the man ashore; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Harrell's actions on that dramatic day demonstrated the highest degree of heroism, and it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to pay tribute to this extraordinary young man.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in commending Mr. Douglas Harrell on his heroic rescue of a man from drowning and in extending to him their best wishes for a bright and prosperous future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Douglas Harrell.
