RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Tavis Smiley; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Tavis Smiley is a world renowned radio and television personality and advocate
for African Americans in particular and the brotherhood of man in general;
and
WHEREAS,
Tavis Smiley speaks truth to power and is unafraid, unabashed, and undaunted in
his quest for peace, justice, and equality; and
WHEREAS,
on February 26, 2005, Tavis Smiley and syndicated radio talk show host Tom
Joyner have assembled 35 of the greatest minds in African American thought and
achievement to discuss the state of African Americans in 2005; and
WHEREAS,
Tavis Smiley has chosen New Birth Missionary Baptist church in Lithonia,
Georgia, suburban Atlanta, one of the largest churches in the United States,
under the pastorship and leadership of the anointed, visionary apostle of God,
Bishop Eddie L. Long, as the site for this summit; and
WHEREAS,
Tavis Smiley and Bishop Eddie Long have forged a strong bond of friendship out
of the common purpose of ministering to the triune man physically, mentally, and
spiritually; and
WHEREAS,
this modern day "Paul" seeks to bring about understanding and action to reverse
the downward spiral of the African American condition.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join to
recognize and commend Tavis Smiley for his many contributions to the African
American community and all of Georgia's citizens.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Tavis Smiley.
