RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Reverend Matthew Southall Brown; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Reverend Matthew Southall Brown was born in Savannah, Georgia, and received his
Bachelor of Divinity degree from American Baptist School of Theology in 1961;
and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Brown is well-known and respected as a "Pastor's pastor" who provides
understanding and guidance through his ministerial seminars and conferences;
and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Brown is Senior Pastor of the St. John Baptist Church of Savannah
where he has served with great dedication and enthusiasm since 1969;
and
WHEREAS,
his courageous spirit and constant faith helped this congregation to overcome
the destructive fire which claimed their church in 1993, and, under his
steadfast leadership, they have renewed the legacy of Christian service in their
new worship center completed in 1997; and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Brown is not just a revered pastor but an esteemed builder who has
served as a member and past chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the
Savannah Housing Authority and who is credited with the conversion of the old
East Broad Street School into apartments for the elderly and the handicapped;
and
WHEREAS,
recognized by numerous honors and awards for his extensive service, Reverend
Brown has given so much to his community and his congregation through his
generous and compassionate spirit, great energy, and unimpeachable character and
merits the highest thanks and regard of the State of Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
commending Reverend Matthew Southall Brown for his many years of dedicated
service to his church and community and extend their sincere best wishes on the
occasion of his retirement.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Reverend Matthew Southall
Brown.
