A RESOLUTION

Commending the DeKalb County Public Library; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the DeKalb County Public Library was recently honored by being one of the ten public libraries in the United States and the United Kingdom to be featured in the book Exemplary Public Libraries: Lessons in Leadership, Management, and Service; and

WHEREAS, the DeKalb County Public Library employs some 250 staff members at 23 branches; and

WHEREAS, more than 30 percent of DeKalb County residents are library cardholders (around 206,000 people); and

WHEREAS, studies show that early childhood development programs have the highest long-term economic payback of any investment by government and libraries are becoming more highly valued for their educational benefits; and

WHEREAS, libraries can have some of the greatest impact in the community, especially in the first few critical years of a child́s life; studies have shown that if a child does not have a reading experience before entering school, his or her chances of completing school greatly diminish; and

WHEREAS, the DeKalb County Public Library offers a variety of literacy programs, more than any other system in the state, including family literacy classes, preliteracy classes for children age two and under, homeless shelter initiatives, English as a Second Language classes, and test preparation and work skills classes; and

WHEREAS, in response to population changes, the DeKalb County Public Library now offers multilanguage collections at some of its branches.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the DeKalb County Public Library for its unparalleled achievements in all areas, including childhood education and literacy, and extend their sincerest best wishes for continued success in the future.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the DeKalb County Public Library.
