A RESOLUTION

Commending and honoring Georgia's 48th Infantry Brigade (Enhanced) (Mechanized); and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Georgia's 48th Infantry Brigade was originally organized on April 23, 1825, in Macon as the Macon Volunteers and first mustered into federal service on February 18, 1836, at Picolata, Florida, as Captain Seymor's Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Volunteers; and

WHEREAS, the Brigade underwent many changes and call-ups since the 19th century, and always served our state and country with the highest levels of valor and honor; and

WHEREAS, more than 4,500 soldiers were inducted into federal service November 30, 1990, in support of Desert Storm, successfully completed the most intensive training ever conducted at the Army's National Training Center in California, and were the first and only soldiers of a National Guard combat brigade validated as combat ready for the Gulf War; and

WHEREAS, nearly 4,000 soldiers of today's 48th Infantry Brigade have been mobilized and are training for deployment to Iraq and in support of the Global War on Terrorism; and

WHEREAS, these soldiers of the "Old Gray Bonnet" are once again standing up for our freedoms and answering our nation's call during the most difficult of times; and

WHEREAS, the Brigade consists of the 1st Battalion - 121st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion - 121st Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion - 108th Armor Regiment, 1st Battalion - 118th Field Artillery Regiment, 648th Engineer Battalion, 148th Forward Support Battalion (HSB), Troop E - 108th Cavalry Regiment, 248th Military Intelligence Company, Battery E, 179th Air Defense Artillery; and

WHEREAS, the men and women in each of these units are not just brave soldiers, but they are our family members, our friends, our neighbors, our preachers, our police officers, our teachers, and, most importantly, our heroes.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body commends and honors the enormous patriotism displayed by the soldiers of Georgia's 48th Infantry Brigade (Enhanced) (Mechanized), commits to support their efforts and their families through every means possible, and will forever be grateful for their defense of free people throughout the world.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Major General David Poythress, Adjutant General of the Georgia Department of Defense.
