A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the joint ministries of Mount Zion Baptist Church and Sherwood Baptist Church;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mount Zion Baptist Church of Albany, Georgia, was founded in 1865, and Dr.
Daniel Simmons has been serving the 1,700 members of its congregation since
1991; and
WHEREAS,
Sherwood Baptist Church of Albany was founded in 1956, and Dr. Michael Catt has
served as the pastor to its 2,400 resident members since 1989; and
WHEREAS,
under the wise guidance and foresight of these two exemplary pastors, these
distinguished churches have worked together to build bridges and to promote
unity and racial reconciliation in Dougherty County since the mid 1990's;
and
WHEREAS,
considering each other co-pastors, Dr. Simmons and Dr. Catt frequently hold
joint services, jointly receiving the Martin Luther King Celebration 2003 Unity
Award for their community leadership, and their congregations collaborate on
numerous projects both within their churches and the greater community;
and
WHEREAS,
as a result of the cooperation they have modeled, other pastors and churches are
coming together to build stronger relationships with one another and beginning
to work together to face the challenges of the 21st century.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the joint ministries of Mount Zion Baptist Church and Sherwood Baptist
Church and extend to both congregations their sincere best wishes for success as
they continue to work together to improve the Albany community.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Daniel Simmons of
Mount Zion Baptist Church and Dr. Michael Catt of Sherwood Baptist Church.
