A
RESOLUTION
Commending
Reverend Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough on the occasion of his retirement; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
for more than 35 years, Reverend Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough has served his fellow
man with humility and devotion, providing leadership at all levels of the United
Methodist Church in communities in northern Illinois and northern Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
after successfully leading Chicago congregations through a period of racial
transition, he was appointed in 1974 to the Cascade Church in Atlanta, where he
shepherded the church from a dying congregation of less than 100 members to a
vibrant faith community of over 7,000; and
WHEREAS,
besides his invaluable leadership to Cascade Church, which has included
overseeing a relocation in 1994 and planning for an upcoming move to yet a
bigger church facility, Dr. Kimbrough has been highly involved with a number of
organizations and boards; among his current activities, he is a member of the
United Methodist Publishing Board, the Board of Ordained Ministry of the North
Georgia Conference, the Huston Tillotson University Board of Trustees, the Board
of Directors for Black Methodists for Church Renewal, Inc., as well as his
service as treasurer of the MARTA Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Kimbrough's faithful service and leadership has earned him numerous
accolades, including the Chairman's Award from the fourth biannual Convocation
for Pastors of African-American Churches, the Philip Award from the National
Association of United Methodist Evangelists, and being honored as one of the
"Community Heroes" whose face appears on the Coca-Cola Centennial Olympic Wall,
among countless other distinctions; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Kimbrough is also the author of
Nothing is
Impossible and a contributor to
365 Meditations for
Men and
365 Meditations for
Families; widely admired for his great
insight and eloquence, his address, "Reclaiming Our Mission to the City,"
appears in the book,
The World Forever Our
Parish; and
WHEREAS,
a devoted family man, Dr. Kimbrough is married to author and educator, Mrs.
Marjorie L. Kimbrough, and is the proud father of Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough and
Mr. Wayne M. Kimbrough; and
WHEREAS,
after so many years of giving so much to his church and his community, Dr.
Kimbrough will be retiring, and his outstanding leadership will be sorely missed
by the congregants of Cascade Church and beyond.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
commending Reverend Dr. Walter L. Kimbrough on his numerous contributions to the
United Methodist Church and to Georgia and extend their very best wishes for a
happy and fulfilling retirement.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Reverend Dr. Walter L.
Kimbrough.
