A RESOLUTION

Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Colquitt County; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on February 25, 1856, Colquitt County was created by an act of the Georgia legislature, making it the 115th county in the state; and

WHEREAS, today, this thriving county in southwest Georgia is home to over 40,000 citizens who take pride in their region's rich heritage and great promise for the future; and

WHEREAS, the county seat of Colquitt County is Moultrie, founded in 1879 and nationally known as the "City of Beautiful Homes"; and

WHEREAS, noted for its gorgeous landscapes, sprawling oak trees, and stately homes, Moultrie, a city of more than 15,000 residents, is widely recognized for its beauty and historical value, and its entire commercial downtown area, as well as eight distinguished structures throughout the community, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and

WHEREAS, besides Moultrie, Colquitt County boasts a number of charming small towns, including Berlin, Doerun, Ellenton, Funston, Norman Park, and the tiny city of Riverside, which, with a current population of 74, may be the smallest town in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, although manufacturing is today the largest employment sector in the county, Colquitt County has always been a state leader in agriculture, thanks to its long growing season and various types of soil; and

WHEREAS, today, Colquitt County generates more nonpoultry agricultural revenue than any other county in Georgia and is home to the largest annual farm show in the southeastern United States, the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition; and
WHEREAS, Colquitt County is home to the Moose Moss Aquatics Center, a world class diving facility that served as a training site for the 1996 Olympic Games, and is a sportsman's paradise with eight quail hunting preserves and excellent opportunities for wild turkey, deer, and dove hunting; and

WHEREAS, from lush, rural landscapes to lovely southern towns, Colquitt County has a wide and enduring appeal, and Georgia has been very blessed to have had such a vibrant community in its midst for 150 years.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in commemorating and celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Colquitt County and express their best wishes for many more years of prosperity for this treasure of southwest Georgia.
