By: Senator Adelman of the 42nd

A RESOLUTION

Commending the Truancy Intervention Project; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in 1991, the leadership of the Atlanta Bar Association began to collaborate with the Fulton County Juvenile Court, Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County Schools and others to combat truancy in Fulton County; and

WHEREAS, the Truancy Intervention Project (TIP) pairs truants referred to the Court with caring legal advocates who not only represent them in Court, but become legal mentors for the children and their families; and

WHEREAS, touting an 82 percent success rate, TIP has been recognized by local legal organizations and the state and American Bar Associations; and

WHEREAS, the program is currently being replicated throughout Georgia, with fifteen other Georgia counties having adopted the TIP model in their communities; and

WHEREAS, since TIP's inception, volunteers across the state have represented more than 4,500 children and trained over 1,500 members from virtually every segment of the legal community to be committed mentors; and

WHEREAS, in Fulton County alone, the efforts of TIP volunteers have resulted in savings of over $3.8 million in court-appointed legal fees; and

WHEREAS, with a proven track record of success in every demographic area of the state, TIP will celebrate its fifteenth year of service in 2006.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in commending the Truancy Intervention Project for its outstanding work in the community and thank all of the TIP volunteers for their invaluable service to Georgia's youth.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Truancy Intervention Project.
