RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending YouthBuild USA, a national, nonprofit organization benefiting
low-income youth; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
YouthBuild USA is a national, nonprofit organization that works to unleash the
positive energy of low-income young people to rebuild their communities and
their lives; and
WHEREAS, YouthBuild supports an expanding nation-wide network of more than 200 local YouthBuild programs, and in this role, YouthBuild USA orchestrates advocacy for public funding; guidance and quality assurance in program implementation; leadership opportunities for youth and staff; research to understand best practices; and grants and loans to YouthBuild affiliates; and
WHEREAS, YouthBuild supports an expanding nation-wide network of more than 200 local YouthBuild programs, and in this role, YouthBuild USA orchestrates advocacy for public funding; guidance and quality assurance in program implementation; leadership opportunities for youth and staff; research to understand best practices; and grants and loans to YouthBuild affiliates; and
WHEREAS,
YouthBuild USA leads the national YouthBuild movement and contributes to the
broader youth and community development fields in order to diminish poverty in
the United States and internationally; and
WHEREAS,
YouthBuild provides low-income, out-of-school, out-of-work young adults between
the ages of 16 to 24 with an opportunity to rebuild their communities and their
own lives with a commitment to work, education, responsibility, and family;
and
WHEREAS,
unemployed young people, ages 16 to 24, spend six to 12 months in the program,
dividing their time between the construction site and the YouthBuild classroom,
where they earn their GED or high school diploma and prepare for jobs or
college; and
WHEREAS,
individual counseling, peer groups, driver's license training, recreational and
cultural activities, and additional opportunities for community service are
integrated into their experience with major emphasis placed on leadership;
and
WHEREAS,
there are currently six programs in Georgia: Cobb Housing, Inc., Marietta;
Fulton Atlanta Community Action Agency; Southwest Georgia Empowerment Zone,
Vienna; Flint Area Consolidated Housing, Inc., Montezuma; Goodwill Industries
of North Georgia, Atlanta; and City of Savannah; and
WHEREAS,
highest commendations should be extended to YouthBuild USA.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body commends YouthBuild USA
for its dedicated efforts to provide outstanding development and educational
programs to Georgia's youth.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to YouthBuild USA.
