A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending Mrs. Sheila M. McNeill, National President of the Navy League of the United States; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Sheila M. McNeill, a native of Brunswick, Georgia, joined the Navy League of the United States in 1966 and was elected as its National President in June, 2003, becoming the first woman to hold this position since the league's founding in 1902; and

WHEREAS, the Navy League of the United States is the only civilian organization dedicated to supporting the sea services, including the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Merchant Marine; and

WHEREAS, having served at every leadership level including President of the Camden-Kings Bay Council, Georgia state president, and region president for the South Atlantic Coast Region, Mrs. McNeill has provided strong, experienced, and intelligent guidance to the league's 70,000 members who are dedicated to educating American citizens and elected officials about the importance of sea power; and

WHEREAS, during her service as national vice president responsible for legislative affairs activities, she aggressively and effectively sought support on Capitol Hill and made educating congressional members about the sea services her top priority; and

WHEREAS, she served on the National Maritime Policy Committee from 1996-1998 and as a member of the executive committee for the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, an influential advisory committee to the Secretary of Defense and other Department of Defense officials; and

WHEREAS, in the State of Georgia, she serves on the Governor's state-wide Military Affairs Coordinating Committee and was the commissioning president of the St. Mary's Submarine Museum and charter chairman of the Military Community Council; and
WHEREAS, her service as a member of the Advisory Board of the Coastal Georgia Community College and the Board of Directors of the Chambers of Commerce in Glynn and Camden Counties is a testament to her dedicated leadership within her community, which was recognized by her inclusion in Georgia Trend Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential Georgians; and

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia is honored and proud to have such a distinguished lady as one of its citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in recognizing and commending Mrs. Sheila M. McNeill for her outstanding service to the United States sea services, Georgia's coastal communities, and the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Sheila M. McNeill.
