A RESOLUTION

Remembering and honoring the life of Mrs. Katherine Gilmer Douglas; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, during her life, Mrs. Katherine Gilmer Douglas touched countless lives with her tremendous kindness, leaving a legacy of unconditional love, caring, and devotion to her family; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Douglas was born on December 5, 1923, to Jesse Edward and Mary Lee Gilmer in Salt Lake City, Utah; and

WHEREAS, she moved to Georgia at an early age when her father was transferred here by his employer, living in East Point until her mid-high school years when the family moved to Albany; and

WHEREAS, a 1941 graduate of Albany High School, Mrs. Douglas married her high school sweetheart, Sergeant James Hubert Douglas, Jr., in 1943; after living in Wisconsin, Sergeant Douglas was shipped to the Pacific theater of operations during World War II, after which they settled in Albany; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Douglas and her husband adopted two children, James Edward Douglas in 1951 and Mary Katherine Douglas in 1953, before a son, John Foster Douglas, was born in 1953; and

WHEREAS, in 1962, Mrs. Douglas and her children moved to DeKalb County, where she began working and eventually became the office manager for the state court solicitor; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Douglas was a faithful member of North Decatur United Methodist Church and after retirement could be found nearly every night curled up in her chair reading a novel; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Douglas passed away on October 13, 1999, leaving a tremendous void in the hearts of her many friends and family, who will always affectionately remember this extraordinary lady for her compassion, generosity, and warm and loving spirit.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join together to remember and honor the life of Mrs. Katherine Gilmer Douglas and to express their most sincere condolences to her family and friends.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mrs. Katherine Gilmer Douglas.
