A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending former Murray County Deputy Sheriff Chuck Butler for his courageous and unselfish act in giving the gift of life through the National Bone Marrow Transplant Program to a teenage girl; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, each year, approximately 30,000 patients in the United States will be diagnosed with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases that can be treated with a stem cell transplant; and

WHEREAS, the National Bone Marrow Donor Programs Registry has a data base with over five million donors; and

WHEREAS, the National Bone Marrow Donor Program arranges more than 160 transplants a month and has arranged more than 15,000 transplants since 1987; and

WHEREAS, a match is extremely rare; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Chuck Butler having participated for several years in the local Blood Assurance Program was notified that he was a rare bone marrow match for a teenage girl suffering from leukemia; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Chuck Butler who was blessed with good health, never having spent a night in a hospital, knowing of the risks to his health, chose without hesitation to undergo a strenuous medical evaluation and transplant process to give another the hope of life; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Chuck Butler has continued to demonstrate courage as he has also served two tours of duty in Iraq assisting Iraqi police forces.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and commend Deputy Chuck Butler for his courageous and unselfish act of placing his health at risk to give the gift of hope and life to another human being.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Deputy Sheriff Chuck Butler.
