RESOLUTION
Recognizing
Mrs. Robena Juliatt Gaines Flakes as the recipient of the Rosa Parks Woman of
Courage Award; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Robena Juliatt Gaines Flakes is the recipient of the Rosa Parks Woman of
Courage Award from Sisters, Inc., of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Flakes was born in Phenix City, Alabama, the oldest of eight children born
to Mr. and Mrs. Napoleon Gaines, and she is a descendant of John Wesley Gains,
the founder of Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
she attended Fifth Avenue School and Radcliff School in Columbus, Georgia, and
graduated from South Girard High School in Phenix City, Alabama;
and
WHEREAS,
she studied early childhood education at Morris Brown College and Columbus State
University and has also attended the Americus Baptist Theology College at
Friendship Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Flakes was a business owner in North Phenix City for 15 years and employed
with the Muscogee County School System at Reese Road Elementary School for eight
years; and
WHEREAS,
she has always had a deep passion for the welfare of children and that passion
drove her to establish the Fourth Street Day Care Center in Columbus, Georgia,
and from 1993 until 2005, she served as its director; and
WHEREAS,
under her directorship the center grew from serving 56 children to serving 150
children, and it is the first day care center to receive the Center of
Distinction Award from the State of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
since her retirement as director, she has served as consultant for the center;
and
WHEREAS,
she is married to the Reverend Dr. J.H. Flakes, Sr., pastor at Fourth Street
Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia, and they have three children and three
grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the accomplishments of this remarkable
and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Mrs. Robena Juliatt Gaines Flakes for her many years of
unselfish and dedicated public service, congratulate her on being selected to
receive the Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award from Sisters, Inc., of the Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and extend to her their most sincere best wishes for
continued success and happiness.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mrs. Robena
Juliatt Gaines Flakes.
