A RESOLUTION


Celebrating the sesquicentennial anniversary of Dawson County; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the year 2007 marks the 150th anniversary of Dawson County's birth on December 3, 1857, when it was formed from Lumpkin and Gilmer counties by the Georgia legislature; and

WHEREAS, the county's name was chosen in honor of Captain William Crosby Dawson, a United States senator, statesman, lawyer, and soldier; and

WHEREAS, in 1836 he was captain of volunteers under U.S. General Winfield Scott in the Creek and Seminole Indian War in Florida; and

WHEREAS, Dawson County officials are considering plans to hold a grand sesquicentennial event in May of 2007 and are preparing for a community-wide birthday celebration that will involve Dawson businesses, civic organizations, historical societies, and public schools; and

WHEREAS, in honor of the sesquicentennial, a new county logo has been proposed that incorporates a version of the beloved "Scotty Dog" along with the slogan, "Dawson County, where quality of life matters"; and

WHEREAS, the anniversary celebration is an opportunity to memorialize the dedication and hard work of generations past and present and to stimulate public interest in the history of Dawson County and the United States; and

WHEREAS, as Dawson County continues to reach out with optimism into the 21st century, it is proud to keep the memory of its beginning close to its heart in hopes that succeeding generations will appreciate its heritage; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to recognize this historic milestone.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in celebrating the sequicentennial anniversary of Dawson County and honor the rich heritage of its 150 years of existence in the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the governing authority of Dawson County.
