RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. Bennett Kyle Yancey; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia has lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the
unfortunate passing of Mr. Bennett Kyle Yancey on February 16, 2008;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Yancey was a celebrated husband, father, lawyer, and community servant in
Cobb County, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
born in Tampa, Florida, he spent his childhood near Ashburn, Georgia, and moved
to Austell as an adolescent, graduating from Austell High School in 1944;
and
WHEREAS,
upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Force and
served in the Allied Occupation Forces in Japan; and
WHEREAS,
upon being honorably discharged, he attended Emory University and went on to
graduate from the University of Georgia Law School in 1951; and
WHEREAS,
he was a member of the Cobb County Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Association,
and the American Bar Association, and he was admitted to practice before the U.
S. Supreme Court and actively practiced law until his death; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Yancey was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1962 and served two terms,
being responsible for legislation that changed the Cobb County Commission from a
single commissioner to multiple commissioners and the bill that created the
State Court of Cobb County; and
WHEREAS,
he was a member for over 50 years of both the South Cobb Lions Club and Latham
Lodge, and he supported the American Chestnut Society and the Society for the
Preservation of Old Mills; and
WHEREAS, he was an avid reader of American and English history and an accomplished and generous gardener; and
WHEREAS, he was an avid reader of American and English history and an accomplished and generous gardener; and
WHEREAS,
his devotion to his community was only surpassed by his love for his wife,
Janet; daughter, Kathryn Yancey; sons, Phillip and Stephen; and his three
grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
in life he commanded the esteem of his fellow Georgians; at his death it is
fitting and proper that we extend sympathy to his family, colleagues, and
friends.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join together in honoring and remembering the life of Mr. Bennett Kyle
Yancey, recognizing his many contributions to the community, and extending their
most sincere condolences to his family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mr. Bennett Kyle Yancey.
