A
RESOLUTION
Commending
Jerry "Tacuma" Brown; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
a native of Glendale, Ohio, a town near Cincinnati, Jerry "Tacuma" Brown is the
grateful foster son of Rev. Rufus and Katie Mae Saturday, who will celebrate her
101st birthday in June, 2008; and
WHEREAS,
he participated in the choir from a very early age at Mt. Zion Missionary
Baptist Church in Ohio, where he began his journey of community service;
and
WHEREAS,
he joined the U.S. Air Force in January, 1961, and became a ballad soloist and
sang with several military vocal groups, including the winners of the 1962 All
Air Force Talent Contest held at Edwards Air Force Base in California;
and
WHEREAS,
he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in the early 90´s and joined the Pan African
Orthodox Christian Church, Shrine of the Black Madonna, in the West End
neighborhood. In addition to singing in its choir, he was immediately asked to
consider participating in the Neighborhood Planning Unit by the presiding
chairperson, Rev. Woodrow Smith, Jr.; and
WHEREAS,
he was quickly appointed chairperson of the Crime and Public Safety Committee
and chairperson of the Zoning and Land Use Committee, serving both committees
until he was elected chairperson of the Neighborhood Planning Unit in 1997;
and
WHEREAS,
many improvements occurred during his tenure, including the development of a
working, proactive relationship between the planning unit and the six
historically black colleges and universities of Atlanta, as well as developing
active Neighborhood Planning Unit committees and ensuring that they sincerely
welcome and encourage the involvement of the entire community; and
WHEREAS,
he has served and remains a member of many committees and boards throughout the
greater Atlanta community, including the Code Enforcement and Neighborhood
Deputies Organizing Committee, the Fulton County Juvenile Community Advisory
Board, the Housing Authority of Fulton County, the National Association of
Housing Revitalization Officials, the Atlanta Planning and Advisory Board, and
the Mayor´s Office organizing committee for a memorial in honor of Mrs.
Coretta Scott King; and
WHEREAS,
he is now retired but is still actively involved in his church and community,
serving as a blessing to many brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, and
grandchildren that sincerely love and appreciate this wonderful man and
community leader.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body heartily commend Jerry "Tacuma" Brown for his diligent and
compassionate service to his community and to the State of Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Jerry
"Tacuma" Brown.
