A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life of Kiliaen V. R. Townsend; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Kiliaen V. R. Townsend has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that he played in leadership and his deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, he diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of his time, talents, and energy toward the betterment of his community and state as evidenced dramatically by his 22 years of outstanding service as an attorney, corporate CEO, member of the Georgia General Assembly, developer, and educational consultant; and

WHEREAS, he received his education from Williams College and the University of Virginia Law School, and he served as a law clerk for Judge John J. Parker of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals before volunteering for the U.S. Army where he was selected for the Counter Intelligence Corps and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant; and

WHEREAS, after the service, he became a member of the Georgia Bar and the Lawyers Club, was an associate of Dorsey and Dorsey, and was the developer of Townsend Place, the first 24-hour gated community of luxury townhouses in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the Georgia General Assembly, he gained support of both parties in exposing and reforming the out of control pension system, and in turn, the Speaker appointed him as vice chairman of the Pension Committee, becoming the first and only Republican in the 20th Century to hold a leadership position on a House committee; he introduced a lottery bill many years before it was seriously considered, and he was behind many other favorable legislative initiatives; and

WHEREAS, after 27 years and 14 terms, most of them without opposition, he retired as the longest serving Republican legislator; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his career as a lawyer, legislator, developer, and a corporate CEO, he undertook a fifth career as an educational consultant, and throughout his career he served on numerous boards and associations; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable public servant be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the life of Kiliaen Townsend for his many decades of efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service and extend to his family their most sincere condolences.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Kiliaen Townsend.
