RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of John R. Harrison, outstanding Georgia citizen, and
expressing regret at his passing; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
on April 23, 2007, Georgia lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the
passing of John R. Harrison; and
WHEREAS,
born January 8, 1922, Mr. Harrison was the well-known operator and president of
the Waycross Cable Company, which he founded in May, 1964; and
WHEREAS,
he was strongly committed to giving back to his community as demonstrated by his
extensive public service career, which included serving for two terms as mayor
of the City of Waycross while serving as a Waycross city commissioner, serving
two consecutive terms as president of the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of
Commerce, and acting as chairman of the Industrial Authority; and
WHEREAS,
his commitment to his fellow citizens was also demonstrated by his active
service in many civic organizations, including his service as president of the
Waycross Kiwanis Club, of which he was a member for 47 years; and
WHEREAS,
he was loved and respected by his many colleagues and peers as evidenced by his
receipt of the Quigley Award for outstanding showman of the year from the
National Theatre Association of Motion Pictures of America and his receipt of
the Miller Medal for outstanding community service; and
WHEREAS,
he was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church for 57 years where
he served on the Administrative Board as trustee and in numerous other church
committees and positions; and
WHEREAS,
he was a loving husband to his late wife, Eleanor Sanders Harrison, a loving
father to their son, Ronald Edmond Harrison, and a proud grandfather to his
grandson, Jonathan Caleb Harrison; and
WHEREAS,
he was a remarkable man filled with much strength of character and compassion
for those in need, and he will always be remembered in the hearts of those who
knew him and loved him dearly; and
WHEREAS,
John R. Harrison was a tireless, dedicated civil servant who truly gave his all,
unconditionally, to the development and growth of the City of Waycross, and his
contributions to the community as a civic leader forged a legacy that will never
be forgotten.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body remember John R. Harrison for his many contributions to the State of
Georgia and express their sympathy to his friends and family for their
tremendous loss.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the son of
John R. Harrison.
