RESOLUTION
Commending
Bo Callaway for his lifetime of achievement and service; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Howard H. "Bo" Callaway currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Board of
Trustees for the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation and he also served as Chairman,
President and/or CEO from 1953 until 1964, 1966 until 1970, and again from
September 1993 until November 2003; and
WHEREAS,
from 1949 until 1952, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Army, and
during his military career he was a platoon leader in Korea and an instructor in
tactics at Fort Benning, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
during his career in the military service, he was the recipient of the Combat
Infantry Badge, three Campaign Ribbons, and the Republic of Korea Presidential
Unit Citation; and
WHEREAS,
in 1964, following 11 years as Callaway Gardens President and CEO, the 3rd
Congressional District of Georgia elected him to the United States Congress; and
WHEREAS,
after his term in Congress, he returned to Callaway Gardens from 1966 to 1970
and since 1970, he has served as the Chairman/President of Crested Butte
Mountain Resort in Colorado and from 1970 to 1973, he also served three years as
President/Chairman and CEO of Interfinancial, Inc. in Atlanta; and
WHEREAS,
Bo Callaway was appointed to the position of Secretary of the Army in April
1973, and he was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Public Service by the
Department of Defense in 1975; and
WHEREAS,
in 1976, his political talent and experience were called into action as he
managed Gerald Ford´s presidential campaign; and
WHEREAS,
he has been politically active throughout his career; in 1966, he was the
Republican nominee for Governor of Georgia and in 1980, he was a candidate for
the Republican nomination for the United States Senate from Colorado, and from
1981 until 1987 he was Chairman of the Colorado Republican Party;
and
WHEREAS,
Bo Callaway has been an active member of several Boards of Directors including
Trust Company of Georgia, Georgia Power Company, The Southern Company, SCI
Systems, Inc., United Bank of Denver, World Business Council, Chief
Executive´s Organization, and the CML Group; he also served as the
International President of the Young Presidents´ Organization and was Vice
President of the State of Georgia Chamber of Commerce from 1961 until 1964;
and
WHEREAS,
in July 2001, he was appointed to the Board of the Georgia Department of
Industry, Trade and Tourism and he is currently serving as Chairman of the
Tourism Committee of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS,
he has been a member of numerous organizations including the Board of Regents of
the University System of Georgia, National 4-H Service Committee, Republican
National Committee, and Phi Kappa Phi; and
WHEREAS,
he was born in LaGrange, Georgia, on April 2, 1927, and attended The Georgia
Institute of Technology in 1944 and 1945; he graduated from the United States
Military Academy at West Point in 1949; and
WHEREAS,
Bo and his wife, Beth, have five children and 16 grandchildren.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that Howard H. "Bo"
Callaway is commended on his life of achievement and service to his state and
country and it is hoped that he will continue to enjoy good health and the
fruits of his labors.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Howard H.
"Bo" Callaway.
