A RESOLUTION


Urging the Jekyll Island Authority to protect the south end of Jekyll Island from development; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Jekyll Island is home to some of the state´s most treasured natural and cultural resources, and it is the expressed intent of this body to ensure the preservation of these resources for the enjoyment of all Georgians now and for future generations to come; and

WHEREAS, Jekyll Island proudly displays one of Georgia´s largest stretches of barrier island property; and

WHEREAS, Jekyll Island is recognized as "Georgia´s Jewel," and its remarkable beauties must be preserved so that they may continue to shine for all citizens of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the south end of Jekyll Island contains nesting sites for sea turtles and any destruction of this fragile ecosystem could doom the turtles to extinction; and

WHEREAS, the south end of Jekyll Island contains soccer fields that are utilized and enjoyed by hundreds of children and their families; and

WHEREAS, the south end of Jekyll Island is home to the Jekyll Island 4-H Center which has been connecting children to Georgia´s coastal environment for 25 years and reaches more than 11,000 people each year, using hands-on techniques to engage young minds.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body urge the Jekyll Island Authority to protect the nesting sites, the soccer fields, and the 4-H Center on the south end of Jekyll Island from any development so that they many continue to be enjoyed by the average people of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to members of the Jekyll Authority.
