A RESOLUTION


Commending Georgia Radio Reading Service; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, over 25,000 blind and print-handicapped Georgians benefit from the services provided by Georgia Radio Reading Service; and

WHEREAS, every day books, newspapers, and magazines read by volunteers are provided free of charge to visually handicapped persons through on-line streaming and a broadcast on a special subchannel radio service made available to qualified persons; and

WHEREAS, while Georgia Radio Reading Service is a not for profit organization, the Georgia General Assembly provided its initial funding in 1980 and remains its primary funding source; and

WHEREAS, the organization´s three full-time and four part-time employees are assisted by over 200 volunteers, making it possible to broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and

WHEREAS, most listeners have been blind since birth, although many are visually impaired senior citizens who retain enough vision to remain active but are no longer able to read; and

WHEREAS, the service to Georgia´s visually impaired citizens performed by the Georgia Radio Reading Service is invaluable, and it is only proper that this great organization be recognized and honored.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Georgia Radio Reading Service for its great contribution to Georgia´s citizens.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Radio Reading Service.
