A
RESOLUTION
Congratulating
Cynthia Tucker on being presented the Pulitzer Prize; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Cynthia Tucker is a nationally renowned journalist and editorial page editor for
The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution and an admired
syndicated columnist whose commentaries appear in newspapers across the country;
and
WHEREAS,
she is a native of Monroeville, Alabama, and a graduate of Auburn University in
Alabama; and
WHEREAS,
she joined the Atlanta
Journal as a reporter in 1976, later
becoming an editorial page editor responsible for guiding the development of the
newspaper's opinion on everything from foreign policy to local school board
races; and
WHEREAS,
she is greatly admired by her peers as demonstrated by her receipt of many
professional awards and honors, including a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard
University in 1988 through 1989, a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for
commentary, the American Society of Newspaper Editors' Distinguished Writing
Award in 2000, a four-time Cox Newspaper award winner in column writing, and the
2006 NABJ's Journalist of the Year award; and
WHEREAS,
in 2007, Cynthia Tucker was selected to receive the coveted Pulitzer Prize for
commentary; and
WHEREAS,
the Pulitzer Prize was awarded for her distinguished commentary and "her
courageous clear-headed columns that evince a strong sense of morality and
persuasive knowledge of the community"; and
WHEREAS,
this distinguished lady and public servant has dedicated much of her life to the
citizens of the State of Georgia, working to improve the quality of life for all
Georgians; and
WHEREAS, she has diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of her time, talents, and energy toward the betterment of her community and state; and

WHEREAS,
she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and commitment; and she has given inspiration
to many through her high ideals, morals, integrity, and deep concern for her
fellow man.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that this body
congratulates Cynthia Tucker upon being named the 2007 winner of the Pulitzer
Prize for commentary, commends her for her many contributions to the State of
Georgia and this nation, and extends to her its most sincere best wishes for
continued success.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Cynthia
Tucker.
