A RESOLUTION


Honoring and remembering the life of William "Bill" Ervin Lovett; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia has lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of William "Bill" Ervin Lovett; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Lovett was born in Wrightsville, Georgia, on the ninth day of the ninth month of 1919 to William Herschel and Roxie Louise Lovett; and

WHEREAS, the family moved to Dublin, where his father was involved in cotton farming and acquired the daily newspaper, The Courier-Herald; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Lovett witnessed the Gainesville tornado of 1936 while attending Riverside Military Academy, and he attended Duke University and the University of Virginia before serving nobly in the United States Navy during World War II, rising to the rank of petty officer; and

WHEREAS, he met the love of his life, Janelle Griffin, in 1942, and the two were married on May 16 on their first date; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Lovett worked as his father's right hand man, managed the newspaper in his father's absence during a number of political campaigns, and eventually became president of The Courier-Herald Publishing Company; and

WHEREAS, he managed the family baseball park, Lovett Park, selling tickets and hot dogs while the Dublin Green Sox went on to win a pennant; and

WHEREAS, he served his neighbors tirelessly on the board of stewards of the First United Methodist Church and was a founding member of the Pine Forest United Methodist Church and a member of the Highlands United Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, on the Dublin City Council, his leadership was instrumental in building a larger courthouse, renovating City Hall, installing a natural gas system, and bringing to Dublin the city manager system of government, a format designed to improve efficiency while limiting partisan squabbling; and

WHEREAS, his immense devotion to serving the community was surpassed only by his loving devotion to his family, and he is survived by his loving wife, Janelle; children, Anne, Billy, Griffin, and Herschel; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives, colleagues, neighbors, and friends.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor and remember the life of this outstanding community leader, William "Bill" Ervin Lovett, and extend their most sincere condolences to his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of William "Bill" Ervin Lovett.
