RESOLUTION
Commending
the tourism industry in Georgia and establishing January 30, 2007, as a time to
recognize the vital role that the travel and tourism industry plays in
Georgia´s economic prosperity, and the quality of life for all Georgians
hosting just over 62 million visitors; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
tourism annually generates approximately $28 billion in tourism expenditures,
which supports 217,000 jobs and contributes $1.3 billion in state and local tax
revenue; and
WHEREAS,
travel and tourism industry representatives work to promote Georgia as a premier
travel destination with unique places, scenes, and activities; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia encompasses one of the country´s most diverse landscapes, including
metropolitan Atlanta, more than 100 miles of pristine coastline, the foothills
of the Appalachian Mountains, unspoiled forests, lakes and rivers, and fertile
farmlands; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia offers a wealth of travel destinations within an easy drive from
anywhere in the Southeast; and
WHEREAS,
visitors can tour the Georgia Aquarium, explore the vineyards of North Georgia,
rediscover The Cloister on Sea Island, take a ride on the SAM Shortline in
Cordele, or visit one of Georgia´s many state parks; and
WHEREAS,
tourism is a clean industry that enhances the quality of life within the state,
supports the critical services that Georgians require, and creates the
environment that attracts non-tourism businesses to Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Georgia tourism industry for the positive impact tourism has on the State of
Georgia and all of its citizens and establish January 30, 2007, as a time to
recognize the travel and tourism industry.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ken Stewart, Commissioner
of the Georgia Department of Economic Development; Dennis Kelley, Chairman of
the Georgia Chamber Tourism Committee; Barry White, Chairman of the Tourism
Development Alliance of Georgia; and Peter Bowden, Chairman of the Georgia
Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus.
