RESOLUTION
Recognizing
Southern Catholic College and proclaiming February 18th as Southern Catholic
College Day in the State of Georgia; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Southern Catholic College was founded in Dawsonville, Georgia, in 2000 as the
first Catholic college in Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Southern Catholic College offers a liberal arts college degree program while
also promoting Christian inspiration in individuals and the community;
and
WHEREAS,
Southern Catholic College was built on the history and foundation of the Roman
Catholic Church and is an outstanding college promoting academic excellence and
developing the intellectual, ethical, and leadership potential of its students;
and
WHEREAS,
Southern Catholic College was founded by Mr. Thomas J. Clements, who worked
tirelessly to establish the first Catholic college in Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
in recognition of his significant philanthropic and leadership contributions to
Catholic education, Mr. Thomas Clements received the 2006 St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton Award, the highest honor awarded by the National Catholic Education
Association; and
WHEREAS,
the current and first president of Southern Catholic College is Jeremiah J.
Ashcroft, who was named by the board of trustees on July 1, 2001; and
WHEREAS,
the college is projected to have 500 students in four years and to eventually
provide a quality Christian education to 3,000 students from around the nation;
and
WHEREAS,
Southern Catholic College strives to be a caring and ethical community, and the
hallmarks of this community are the quest for knowledge in the light of the
Catholic faith and the school´s commitment to the service of others; and it
is only fitting and proper that the tremendous efforts and accomplishments of
this significant institution be recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that February 18th is proclaimed
"Southern Catholic College Day" in the State of Georgia in recognition of its
commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and service.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Jeremiah J. Ashcroft,
President of Southern Catholic College, and to Mr. Thomas J. Clements, founder
of Southern Catholic College.
