Senate Resolution 1359

A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life of and expressing regret at the passing of Dr. Emmett T. Martin; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, on March 27, 2008, the State of Georgia lost one of its finest and most distinguished citizens with the passing of Dr. Emmett T. Martin; and

WHEREAS, this life-time resident of Augusta, Georgia, was a graduate of Lucy Laney High School, a 1960 graduate of Benedict College, received a Master of Divinity from Jacksonville Theological Seminary in 1997, and a Doctor of Ministry from Lake Charles Baptist College in 2002; and

WHEREAS, he was long recognized by the citizens of his community for the vital role he played in leadership and for his deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia and the United States; and

WHEREAS, he diligently and conscientiously devoted innumerable hours of his time, talents, and energy toward the betterment of his community as evidenced dramatically by his many years of superlative service as a pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church in Louisville, Georgia from 1960 until 1972, and as a pastor of the historic Springfield Baptist Church from 1972 until his passing; and

WHEREAS, he had numerous affiliations including the National Baptist Convention, USA; General Missionary Convention of Georgia; dean and president of the Congress of Christian Education for Walker Baptist Association, vice president of Springfield Village Park Foundation Board of Directors, University Hospital Clergy Staff, Hope Homes Board of Directors, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and

WHEREAS, he taught at A. R. Johnson, Jr., High School, was a former assistant manager of Conger Insurance, and former staff member at Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company; and

WHEREAS, he received numerous honors and awards including being an inductee into Morehouse Georgia Board of Reverend Preachers in 1996, and a Mayor's Proclamation declaring December 7, 1996, as E. T. Martin Day in Augusta; and

WHEREAS, he was a loving husband to his wife, Betty R. Martin; and

WHEREAS, this singular gentleman was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body express their deepest and most sincere regret at the passing of Dr. Emmett T. Martin and commend him for a lifetime of efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Emmett T. Martin.
