A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Nicholas William Markakis on the occasion of his Major League
baseball debut; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Nick Markakis was born on November 17, 1983, in Glen Cove, New York, and then
moved to Georgia where he attended Woodstock High School; and
WHEREAS,
the members of the Markakis family are all familiar faces in the City of
Woodstock, since three Markakis brothers are Woodstock High School graduates,
one brother is currently a sophomore, and Nick's parents, Dennis and Mary Lou
Markakis, are residents of Woodstock; and
WHEREAS,
Nick Markakis was so impressive as a high school athlete that he was drafted by
the Cincinnati Reds on two different occasions, yet he chose to pursue his
education, matriculating at Young Harris College instead of rushing into the
Major Leagues; and
WHEREAS,
in 2003, during his second year of college, Nick was the #7 draft pick in the
first round by the Baltimore Orioles and went to play for the Baltimore A Team
in 2003 then the AA Team in 2005; and
WHEREAS,
during the spring of 2006, the Baltimore Orioles called on Nick Markakis for the
Major Leagues where he made his spectacular debut on April 3, 2006;
and
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia is honored to claim such a determined individual as one of
its own.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Nick Markakis for his unprecedented athletic performance and congratulate him
upon his Major League success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Nick Markakis.
