RESOLUTION
Expressing
regret at the passing of Kevin Brophy; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia has lost one of its finest and most distinguished young
athletes with the untimely passing of Kevin Brophy; and
WHEREAS,
in November 2002, Kevin Brophy arrived in Georgia after traveling almost 10,000
miles from his home in Melbourne, Australia; and
WHEREAS,
Kevin Brophy attended Memorial Day School in Savannah where he received his high
school diploma while honing his skills on the basketball court; and
WHEREAS,
in one season at Memorial Day School, Brophy averaged 28.4 points, 7.2 rebounds
and 12.4 assists per game, setting a single season school record of 424;
and
WHEREAS,
as a freshman at the University of Georgia, Kevin Brophy was a walk-on for the
men´s basketball team, and started in a total of eight games, seven of
which were SEC contests; and
WHEREAS,
his season scoring high of 19 points came in the Bulldogs´ 68-59 SEC
victory over Vanderbilt, where nine of those deciding points were scored
dramatically by Brophy during the final five minutes of the game; and
WHEREAS,
his attitude, maturity, and work ethic proved to be terrifically contagious,
working as a force of positive encouragement for classmates and teammates alike;
and
WHEREAS,
Kevin Brophy´s life was tragically cut short, as he suffered an automobile
accident just minutes after participating in a youth basketball clinic for the
Athens Boys and Girls Clubs; and
WHEREAS,
his unfortunate departure has left scars upon the hearts of grieving friends,
family, and fans in Georgia and elsewhere; and
WHEREAS,
despite its brevity, Kevin Brophy´s life will continue to serve as an
inspirational example of determination, courage, and compassion.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
join together in honoring the memory of Kevin Brophy and extending the deepest and most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Kevin
Brophy.
