RESOLUTION
Remembering
and honoring the life of Mr. Thomas Watson Brown; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
during the course of his remarkable life, Mr. Thomas Watson Brown touched
countless lives with his generous spirit; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Brown was a prominent Georgian who combined Old South roots with a
wide-ranging philanthropic streak; and
WHEREAS,
he was educated at Harvard University and lived in Marietta, Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
he established the Watson-Brown Foundation that has awarded millions of dollars
in scholarships and is committed to historic preservation; and
WHEREAS,
he received the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center´s community service award
for peace and justice for his contributions to the Legal Aid Society of Atlanta;
and
WHEREAS,
he was a singular individual who described himself as an 18th-century gentleman
and a modern day Luddite and who enjoyed playing the role of provocateur and
being a fun-loving curmudgeon with his friends and acquaintances;
and
WHEREAS,
he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ellen McLaughlin Brown, his
second wife, Anne Henderson West Brown, and two sons, John Judson Brown II and
John Durham West Brown, and is survived by four children and eight
grandchildren.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join
together to express their deepest regret at the passing of Mr. Thomas Watson
Brown and extend their most sincere condolences to his family and
friends.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Thomas
Watson Brown.
