RESOLUTION
Expressing
congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Benjamin Simmons on the occasion of his
100th birthday; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Benjamin Simmons was born on January 16, 1907, in Ridgeland, South Carolina, to
Sam and Katy Simmons and is the only surviving child of 15 children;
and
WHEREAS,
he left South Carolina at an early age and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he
later met the late Eva Fletcher; and
WHEREAS,
in 1941 he was drafted into the military where he served diligently and
courageously in the U.S. Navy during World War II; and
WHEREAS,
after the war, he resumed his work at Southern Railroad in Atlanta, Georgia,
retiring in 1972; and
WHEREAS,
Benjamin has been a member of the Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal
Church for many years and served on the Steward Board; and
WHEREAS,
Benjamin has always sought to aid his fellow man in the hour of need, and for
this reason he gained and maintained the admiration, esteem, and affection of
his family, members of his church, and the community.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body hereby extends to
Benjamin Simmons its most sincere congratulations and best wishes on the
occasion of his 100th birthday.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Benjamin
Simmons.
