RESOLUTION
Commending
the late Mrs. Mary Hines Johnson and proclaiming February 9, 2008, "Mary Hines
Johnson Day"; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Mary Hines Johnson was a great African American educator and a local hero
to the residents of Heard County, Georgia, to whom she contributed so much;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Johnson filled many roles as a teacher, parent, listener, role model,
motivator, and mentor; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Johnson spearheaded the building of the first county-wide school for
African Americans in Heard County, which was completed in 1954; and
WHEREAS,
prior to 1954, African American children attended one room school houses located
throughout the county; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Johnson was so dedicated to the building of the school, she donated her
teaching salary and sponsored fund raisers to help finance the project;
and
WHEREAS,
in honor of her immense contributions and enduring legacy, the Franklin City
Council at its meeting on September 6, 2001, unanimously approved the renaming
of Bevis Road to Mary Johnson Drive; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Johnson's drive and determination to provide all students access to a
quality education and thus to a better quality of life inspired and influenced
countless numbers of people, and her loving generosity continues to resonate
throughout the ensuing years.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body honor the
late Mrs. Mary Hines Johnson for her heroic contributions to the citizens of the
State of Georgia and proclaim February 9, 2008, as "Mary Hines Johnson
Day."
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Sarah Almond.
