RESOLUTION
Commending
the Capitol Police; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Capitol Police originally operated under the Georgia Building Authority as
the Security Division, charged with monitoring entrances into the Capitol and
surrounding buildings; and
WHEREAS,
in 2001, the Safety Officers of the Security Division became known as the
Capitol Police and operate under the authority of the Department of Public
Safety; and
WHEREAS,
the Capitol Police is comprised of two units, the Capitol Square Security Unit
and the Capitol Police Services Unit, with the Capitol Police Services Unit
consisting of sworn police officers who possess the same authority as State
Troopers; and
WHEREAS,
the officers of the Capitol Police serve with honor and distinction, protecting
the members of the General Assembly, Capitol staff persons, government
employees, and all who visit the Capitol; and
WHEREAS,
the Capitol Police have taken many precautions in maintaining safety in and
around the Capitol and proudly reports that there have been no major incidents
since 2001, a status it maintains very vigilantly; and
WHEREAS,
the Capitol Police assist in pedestrian and vehicle traffic successfully sharing
the roads surrounding the Capitol, enduring the elements, the attitudes of
motorists, and the carelessness of pedestrians to ensure everyone arrives safely
at their destination; and
WHEREAS,
the Capitol Police officers committed to this seemingly thankless job deserve
some long overdue recognition from the individuals they are sworn to protect.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Capitol Police for their outstanding and courageous service to the General
Assembly and to the people of this state.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to
transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Capitol Police.
