A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and lifetime achievements of United States Representative Charles
Whitlow Norwood, Jr., D.D.S., by recommending that the Medical College of
Georgia School of Dentistry be named in his honor; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Charlie Norwood earned his dental degree from Georgetown University Dental
School in Washington, D.C., and during the course of his extraordinary career,
Dr. Norwood touched the lives of countless patients; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Norwood served as a dental surgeon in the United States Army Dental Corps
with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the Republic of Vietnam, bravely providing
dental and emergency medical aid to soldiers and civilians often while under
enemy fire, and for his courageous actions he was awarded two Bronze Stars and
a Combat Medic Badge; and
WHEREAS,
during his military career, Charlie Norwood participated in experimental dental
practices that are now standard procedure for all the armed forces, including
the Army´s outreach program that delivers dentists to forward firebases and
the provision of some of the first field-based dental treatment of military
guard dogs; and
WHEREAS,
back at home in Augusta, Georgia, Dr. Norwood started his successful private
practice career and later established a dental device manufacturing lab;
and
WHEREAS,
while in active practice, Dr. Norwood helped numerous private sector patients
including low-income citizens through the Georgia Medicaid program;
and
WHEREAS,
he provided state-wide leadership in dental health as President of the Georgia
Dental Association, President of the Eastern District Dental Society, Delegate
to the American Dental Association, and Founder of the Augusta Dental Disaster
Society; and
WHEREAS,
his commitment to dentistry and the citizens of this state was further
demonstrated by his active membership in the American Dental Association, the
Georgia Academy of Dental Society, and the Augusta Dental Society; and
WHEREAS,
he has received numerous honors and recognitions for his work in dentistry,
including being designated an Honorable Fellow of the Georgia Dental
Association, a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry, and a Fellow of
the American College of Dentistry Sciences; and
WHEREAS,
compelled by his concern for the future of dental and health care for his fellow
citizens, Dr. Charles Norwood sold his dental practice in 1993 so that he could
run for Congress; and
WHEREAS,
in 1994, Charles Whitlow Norwood was elected to Georgia´s Tenth District
seat where he provided outstanding representation to the people of Georgia until
his passing in 2007; and
WHEREAS,
as a Congressman, he fought tirelessly to improve the quality of dental and
health care services for all Americans; and
WHEREAS,
Charles Norwood has left an enduring legacy to all through his noble efforts to
make this world a healthier and better place.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body urge the
Medical College of Georgia to honor the lifetime achievements and legacy of
Honorable Charles Whitlow Norwood, Jr., D.D.S, of Augusta, Georgia, by naming
the School of Dentistry after this great and honorable man who has contributed
much to the dentistry profession and to the State of Georgia and this
nation.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the family of Dr. Charles
Norwood and to the Medical College of Georgia.
