RESOLUTION
Honoring
and remembering the life of Dr. Norris Kemp Mabry; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia lost one of its most distinguished citizens with the
passing of Dr. Norris Kemp Mabry; and
WHEREAS,
during in World War II, he served nobly in the United States Army beginning in
1944 rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant and serving as a high-speed radio
operator; and
WHEREAS,
despite his many duties as a professor at Georgia Southern College, he became a
columnist for the
Statesboro
Herald in 1950, and he was known
throughout the community for the pleasant humor of his column that appeared in
the paper for 55 years; and
WHEREAS,
he was a tremendous advocate for veterans and members of the armed forces, and
he was actively involved in the Bulloch County Historical Society, the Bulloch
Retired Educators Association, the Scottish Heritage Society, the American
Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10825; and
WHEREAS,
he served on the boards for the Center for Irish Studies, Henderson Library, and
the Georgia Southern Museum, and he was a faithful member of the Bethel
Missionary Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS,
he was honored with the Legionnaire of the Year award in 2000, the Statesboro
Citizen of the Year award in 2002, Deen Day Smith Award, the Service to Mankind
award in 1990, and the Lifetime Achievement award in 1999; and
WHEREAS,
his dedication to his community was surpassed only by his immense love for his
family.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body honor the
memory of this extraordinary community servant, Dr. Norris Kemp Mabry, and
express their most sincere condolences to his friends and family.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Norris
Kemp Mabry.
