and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,

Economics Challenge, a competition testing the economics knowledge of teams from
high schools around Georgia in a quiz bowl-style competition, was held in
Atlanta on March 21 at Georgia Public Broadcasting; and
WHEREAS,
working individually and in teams, students answered questions relating to
microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economic understanding, and
current events related to economic issues; and
WHEREAS,
competition was divided between the Adam Smith Division, for students with one
semester of economics or enrollment in Advanced Placement, International
Baccalaureate, honors, or two-semester courses, and the David Ricardo Division,
for students enrolled in an economics course of one semester or less;
and
WHEREAS,
a team from Starr's Mill High School of the Fayette County Public Schools won
first place in the David Ricardo Division; and
WHEREAS,
from a field of five teams in the David Ricardo Division, the Starr's Mill High
School team of Keegan Christensen, Joseph Morrow, Ben Payne, and Kendall Reeves,
coached by economics teacher Mark DeCourcy, won first place by demonstrating a
superior knowledge of economics and how our American free market system works;
and
WHEREAS,
the members of this body know that in these challenging times, economics has
never been more essential, the teaching of it more necessary, and the academic
accomplishments of these young students more important to the future of Georgia
and our nation; and
WHEREAS,
the hope we place in young people like these, that they will lead our state, our
nation, and our world to a better era of prosperity, is a substantial burden on
their shoulders, and this early test shows that these Fayette County students
are up to the challenge.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Keegan Christensen, Joseph Morrow, Ben Payne, Kendall Reeve,
and economics teacher Mark DeCourcy for their outstanding effort and commitment
to learning economics and wish them good luck as they move on to the regional
competition in Atlanta on April 27.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mark
DeCourcy, Starr's Mill High School economics teacher.
