A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Addie Gates Austin; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mrs. Addie Gates Austin on January 3, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Austin graduated from the Prentiss Institute and earned a bachelor's degree from Mississippi Valley State University; and

WHEREAS, a highly respected educator, Mrs. Austin demonstrated a deep personal commitment to challenging the future leaders of this nation beginning with her first teaching job in 1950 at Sam Balkin Elementary in Schlater, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Mrs. Austin was an active member of Strangers' Home Missionary Baptist Church, uplifting the congregation with her voice in the senior choir, leading others as chairperson for Woman's Day and president of Pastor's Aide Club, and representing the church at the Congress of Christian Education and the General Baptist State Convention of Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to molding young minds, Mrs. Austin educated the youth of her church as leader of the youth department, leader of the Sunshine Band and Youth Choir, young adult Sunday school teacher, and teacher and director of vacation bible school; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Austin was blessed with three children, Leafie, Deborah, and Lincoln, one son-in-law, Gregg, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, she gave inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern for her fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding she demonstrated to her family and friends were admired by others; and
WHEREAS, she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Austin will long be remembered for her love of family and friendship, and this loyal mother, sister, grandmother, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Addie Gates Austin and express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Leafie O. Austin, Deborah Austin Thomas, and Lincoln Austin.
