A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the City of Madison on its bicentennial; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, in December of 1808, the Town of Madison was established by Act of the Georgia General Assembly as the permanent site of public buildings for Morgan County; and

WHEREAS, named in honor of President James Madison, Father of the Constitution, the Town of Madison was incorporated as the county seat on December 12, 1809, with the first public officials appointed with the authority to pass bylaws and regulations necessary for the improvement of the community and preservation of the public springs; and

WHEREAS, as time progressed, Madison prospered as the site of government, transportation, and commerce, advancing from a main stop for stagecoaches to the intersection of an interstate and three state highways today; and

WHEREAS, the central business district of Madison serves as the nexus of today's commercial and civic life, building on the prosperity of the past two centuries; and

WHEREAS, Madison has flourished as a center for religious, educational, and cultural institutions and is the epicenter for numerous civic and social organizations; and

WHEREAS, in commemoration of Madison's 200th anniversary, the city will hold a year-long Bicentennial Celebration, holding a series of events and programs for its citizens highlighting the city's milestones, traditions, and legacy; and

WHEREAS, the culmination of the Bicentennial Celebration will be a community dedication of Madison Town Park, a new civic space and cultural events facility in downtown Madison; and

WHEREAS, the City of Madison continues to look with optimism toward the future while keeping the proud memory of its beginning close to its heart to share with succeeding generations.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the City of Madison on its distinguished 200 year history and join with the citizens and officials in celebrating its bicentennial.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the mayor of Madison, Georgia.
